FFH protected area and one of the most beautiful geotopes in Germany
Several rockfalls have given the Dohlenstein its present appearance. For the people of Kahla, their local mountain is both a popular hiking destination and an object of identification.
As a recognized FFH protected area, Dohlenstein and Paffenberg are under special observation. Over time, rare plants, e.g. various orchid species, have settled here. Even wild cats could be detected.
The special geology of the Dohlenstein made it a scientific object of researchers in 2021. They measured the mountain and represented it in a 3D model. It is one of the 30 most beautiful geotopes in Germany.
